The Founders, Vision, and Global Impact
In the 1980s, Master Romero Cavalcanti — known as Jacaré — trained two rising black belts, Fabio Gurgel and Alexandre Paiva. As each began building successful academies, they frequently crossed paths at competitions, often facing off against each other. Though the rivalry was born from mutual respect, it divided athletes who shared the same roots.
To shift that dynamic, the three leaders joined forces in 1993 and founded Alliance, a team built on loyalty, shared vision, and technical excellence. Their goal was simple: compete together, grow together, and build something bigger than any one academy.
By 2014, as their schools flourished and new affiliates emerged worldwide, the founders formalized the Alliance Association. This structure helped unify their training methods and introduced proven management systems to strengthen every school under the Alliance banner.
Today, Alliance Jiu Jitsu has over 300 affiliates across the globe and has earned the title of 14x IBJJF World Champion Team. The roster of legendary athletes includes names like Sergio Moraes, Bruno Malfacine, Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles, Michael Langhi, Lucas Lepri, Gabi Garcia, and many more — all a reflection of the team’s unmatched commitment to excellence, unity, and growth.
At Alliance Jiu Jitsu Huntington Beach, we carry this legacy forward — offering world-class training with a strong foundation in respect, family, and tradition. When you train with us, you’re not just part of a local school. You’re part of one of the strongest Jiu Jitsu teams in the world.
Where It Started. How It Grew. What It Gives.

Over 2,500 years ago, Buddhist monks developed a method of self-defense that relied on leverage and positioning instead of strength or weapons. Their peaceful philosophy meant they couldn’t carry arms, so they studied natural movement and body mechanics to protect themselves against attacks. This style of unarmed defense made its way to Japan, where it was embraced by the samurai. These elite warriors valued it as a powerful tool for close-quarters protection, especially when disarmed.

In 1920, Count Maeda Koma — a Japanese Jiu Jitsu champion — brought the art to Brazil. He was welcomed by Gastão Gracie and, in gratitude, taught the techniques to Gastão’s son, Carlos. But it was Carlos’s younger brother, Helio Gracie, who truly transformed Jiu Jitsu. Lighter and physically weaker than many opponents, Helio refined the techniques using timing, leverage, and control — proving that even a smaller person could defend themselves against much larger attackers. This evolution became what we now know as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to stay calm, think clearly, and use technique to overcome strength. As students train, they develop better coordination, physical strength, and real confidence that carries into everyday life. The focus and discipline built on the mats often show up in school, work, and relationships. Whether you’re looking to get in shape, learn self-defense, or gain mental toughness, the benefits of Jiu Jitsu stay with you far beyond the classroom. It’s not just a workout — it’s a lifelong skill set you can count on.
